The facial area contains a large part of the of the senses (sight, smell, hearing and taste), so it is vitally important to keep the area in good condition through hygiene and health. Eye discharge is a common sign and a frequent reason for veterinary consultation.
Eyelid lacerations are common in dogs, cats and horses. In small animals these may be produced by bites or scratches from other individuals, whilst in horses, the most common cause is chafing with objects from the environment (nails or hooks from the stables, branches, etc).
On the other hand, there are different pathologies that can affect the perioral area and labial commissures, from bacterial infections to immune-mediated processes. The intertrigo is a dermatitis caused by the friction of two skin folds together; the irritation produced and the lack of circulation of air together with the moisture of secretions such as tears or saliva favour the overgrowth of bacteria or yeast.
